Teden Mengi indefinitely promoted to Man United’s first-team: report

It only felt like a matter of time before Teden Mengi was a fully-fledged member of the Manchester United first team. Now is his time.

The 18-year-old defender would make his presence felt within the youth setup last season. So-much so that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would call him up to the senior squad on more than one occasion.

Mengi would actually make his debut last term, coming off the bench in a Europa League game.

Now, according to the Manchester Evening News, the talented 18-year-old United starlet has been promoted to the first team ‘indefinitely’.

This certainly backs up a claim we covered just last month, when The Independent learned that Mengi would be given more first team chances over the next twelve months. It’s good news for a supremely talented young man, who has the world at his feet.

Mengi would play thirty minutes in a pre-season friendly against Aston Villa just last weekend, as he gears up for a breakthrough 2020/21 season.

Plans for Mengi outlined
With both Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling training away from the first-team squad, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe still injured, while Eric Bailly only joining in the sessions from Monday, there’s an opening there for Mengi.

Right now, he’d third or fourth choice behind Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof. That’s a pretty handy situation to be in if you’re Mengi.

It’s always superb to see academy graduates being given their opportunity. Solskjaer has continued that trend wonderfully-well and Mengi is definitely the next in line to get that chance. It’s even better when we’re talking about a young man born and raised in Manchester. He’s one of our own.

Now, it’s about being patient and waiting for his moment. Mengi will get chances, no doubt about it. It’s up to him to take them.
