Man Utd chief Woodward mentioned Two good strikers that would have been a better signing than Ighalo

Man Utd should have tried to sign Danny Ings or Raul Jimenez before resorting to the Nigerian player Odion Ighalo on the January transfer deadline day,

ManU late move to secure Ighalo on a six-month loan deal from the Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua. The Reds are willing to pay one-third of the strikers £300,000-a-week wages until he returns to the Chinese club at the end of the season.

The former Watford striker has scored 46 goals in three seasons in China since making the move from Watford in 2016.

The Nigerian striker netted 36 Premier League goals in 95 appearances for the Hornets but Hasselbaink, who scored 127 top-flight goals in England

eckons Man Utd's recruitment department, overseen by executive vice-chairman, should have made a move for other strikers.

"They knew that they needed a new striker for a long time contract," the Dutchman said on Sky Sports' Transfer Talk Podcast.

"I don't know how much money that has for the transfer but I know it is in Man Utd.

"Why, if you need goals straight away, are you not throwing money at[Danny] Ings for example? He is performing well at the moment.

"Or [Raul] Jimenez at Wolves - throw money at that kind of player. you were in the market for [Erling Braut] Haaland. He prefers Dortmund!"

Ings has already enjoyed his best season in the premier league side so far with 14 goals in 25 league appearances for Southampton.

Jimenez, who Man Utd was initially linked within January, has netted 11 times in the league.
